United Airlines to Launch Seasonal Nonstop Service Between Monterey and Chicago
The Monterey Peninsula Airport District (MPAD), See Monterey, and Visit Carmel have announced the launch of a new once-weekly seasonal nonstop route between Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), operated by United Airlines. Service begins May 23, 2026, marking United’s return to mainline operations at MRY and providing a long-awaited direct Midwest connection.

The Saturday service will run through late August, arriving in Monterey around midday and returning to Chicago later in the afternoon — ideal timing for weekend travel and extended coastal getaways. Tickets are now on sale via United.com and the United app.
The new route connects Chicagoans directly to Monterey County’s 99 miles of dramatic Pacific coastline, iconic attractions like Big Sur and Pebble Beach, and a thriving culinary and wine scene. It also expands options for residents of Monterey County, linking them to nearly 100 U.S. destinations through United’s Midwest hub.
“We’re excited to provide the Monterey community with the first direct flight to Chicago in nearly 50 years,” said Mark Weithofer, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning at United Airlines. “This new flight unlocks the opportunity for travelers from Chicago and across the country to explore Monterey’s coastal sights, while connecting local residents to United’s expansive network.”
Chris Morello, Interim Executive Director of Monterey Regional Airport, emphasized the route’s economic value. “Air access is essential to our region’s vitality. United’s decision to bring mainline service back to Monterey signals strong confidence in the Central Coast market.”
See Monterey President & CEO Rob O’Keefe called the flight a milestone for county-wide tourism: “We’ve been investing heavily in the Chicago market. This nonstop service gives us a powerful foothold in the Midwest and supports our long-term vision for sustainable tourism growth.”
Visit Carmel’s Executive Director Amy Herzog highlighted community impact: “Visitors from Chicago and beyond can now reach our destination more easily. We’re excited to welcome more travelers to experience Carmel-by-the-Sea’s timeless charm and world-class food and wine.”
The announcement comes as MRY undergoes a major transformation, including a new terminal opening in 2027. Alongside hotel development and enhanced visitor infrastructure, the expanded airlift bolsters Monterey County’s position as one of the West Coast’s most desirable destinations.
