Overcoming Boundaries: Oman’s Polysilicon Plant Reaches $1.35 Billion Milestone

Oman’s industrial landscape is about to witness a groundbreaking moment as the nation lays the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art polysilicon production facility. Valued at an impressive $1.35 billion, this project aligns with Oman’s strategic vision to foster advanced industries and attract substantial investments. The polysilicon plant, spearheaded by Omani company United Solar Polysilicon (FZC) SPC, is poised to become a pivotal player in the global solar energy market.

Sohar Freezone, a hub for technological advancement situated in the expansive Sohar Freezone, spanning 160,000 sqm, the polysilicon production facility is a testament to Oman’s commitment to technological innovation. The plant aims to complete construction by 2025, marking a significant step towards achieving the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040. This ambitious project is designed to contribute to Oman’s economic diversification and establish the nation as a key player in the global industrial arena.

The foundation stone laying ceremony, under the auspices of H E Sultan Salim Said al Habsi, Minister of Finance, emphasizes the strategic importance of the polysilicon project. H E Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Undersecretary for Commerce and Industry, highlights its status as the first-of-its-kind venture in the Middle East. This initiative aligns with Oman’s Industrial Strategy 2040, focusing on knowledge-based sectors, research & development, and advanced technology.

Oman’s Industrial Strategy 2040 aims to position the nation as a global hub for technology and innovation. The polysilicon project contributes not only to the industrial growth of Oman but also enhances the capacity of the Sohar Port and Freezone. With a focus on sustainable development, the project promises to create new industrial opportunities, foster business growth, and attract foreign investments.

In January, Shuangliang Eco-Energy Co, a subsidiary of China-based Shuangliang Group, received a significant equipment order valued at $58.32 million from United Solar Polysilicon (FZC) SPC. This collaboration underscores the international significance of the project and highlights Oman’s prowess in fostering global partnerships. Shuangliang will supply cutting-edge equipment for the high-purity polysilicon plant in Sohar, reinforcing the technological advancements driving the project.

The polysilicon project not only contributes to Oman’s economic prosperity but also aligns with the nation’s vision for the future. By encouraging local investment, attracting foreign collaborations, and emphasizing knowledge-based industries, Oman aims to solidify its position in the global market. The project’s impact is expected to extend beyond national borders, meeting the growing demand for metallurgical silicon in key markets across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Oman’s groundbreaking venture into polysilicon production marks a transformative moment in the nation’s industrial journey. As the project progresses, it is poised to elevate Oman’s standing in the global technological landscape, contribute to sustainable economic growth, and play a crucial role in shaping the future of the solar energy industry.
