Artificial Intelligence Takes Orbit: PowerBank and Smartlink AI Advance On-Orbit Computing with Genesis-1 Satellite

Successful activation of Genesis-1 validates AI processing in space, marking a key milestone in the development
Toronto: PowerBank Corporation, a leading North American renewable energy infrastructure developer and asset owner, has shared an additional update on its collaboration with Smartlink AI, also known as Orbit AI, following the successful launch and activation of the Genesis-1 satellite. The update builds on PowerBank’s earlier announcement in December 2025 and confirms that the satellite is now fully operational and running an artificial intelligence model directly in low-Earth orbit.

Launched on December 10, 2025, Genesis-1 represents a significant technological milestone. According to Smartlink AI, the satellite is not only functioning as planned but is actively executing AI workloads in space, rather than relying solely on ground-based data centers. This achievement provides an early proof point for the feasibility of on-orbit AI computing, an emerging field that aims to transform how data is processed, stored, and analyzed beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The successful operation of Genesis-1 demonstrates that AI models can be deployed and run efficiently in space, enabling onboard data processing and reducing dependence on terrestrial infrastructure.

By performing computations directly on the satellite, Orbit AI’s approach has the potential to lower latency, reduce bandwidth requirements for data transmission to Earth, and address growing constraints faced by traditional data centers, including power demand, cooling challenges, and land limitations. Genesis-1 is the first operational node in Orbit AI’s broader vision to develop a coordinated satellite network capable of functioning as a distributed, space-based AI computing platform. Rather than operating as isolated assets, future satellites are intended to work together as part of an integrated system, gradually adding scale, redundancy, and computational capability with each launch. Dr. Richard Lu, President and CEO of PowerBank Corporation, highlighted the significance of the milestone, stating that the company is proud to collaborate with Smartlink AI on the Orbit AI initiative. He noted that the successful activation of Genesis-1 offers a first-hand view into how artificial intelligence computing in space is evolving, marking a new frontier at the intersection of energy infrastructure, aerospace technology, and advanced computing.

Industry interest in orbital AI has been growing steadily as global demand for compute power accelerates. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud services, and data-intensive applications has placed increasing pressure on Earth-based data centers. Against this backdrop, space-based computing is being explored as a complementary solution that could provide scalable capacity while leveraging solar energy and the natural thermal environment of space. Orbit AI’s long-term roadmap includes multiple satellite launches designed to incrementally expand the network’s capabilities. Following the successful deployment of Genesis-1, Smartlink AI is targeting a second satellite launch in the first quarter of 2026, with additional launches planned thereafter.

Each mission is expected to strengthen the platform’s performance, resilience, and ability to support more advanced AI inference workloads. PowerBank is expected to remain a partner throughout the expansion phases of the Orbit AI project. As satellite payloads scale and computational demands increase, PowerBank’s expertise in solar energy systems and thermal control solutions is anticipated to play a more prominent role. These capabilities are particularly relevant for space-based AI infrastructure, where efficient power generation and heat management are critical to sustaining high-performance computing operations. At this stage, PowerBank has clarified that it has not made an equity investment in Orbit AI, and that the terms of any potential remuneration for services provided have yet to be determined. The company has also cautioned that certain operational metrics referenced in the update are based on information supplied by Smartlink AI and have not been independently verified.

About PowerBank Corporation
PowerBank Corporation is an independent renewable and clean energy project developer and owner, focused on distributed and community solar projects across Canada and the United States. The company develops solar and battery energy storage system projects that supply electricity to utilities, commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers. With a potential development pipeline exceeding one gigawatt and more than 100 megawatts of projects already built, PowerBank operates across multiple leading North American markets, including community solar and virtual net metering initiatives.

About Orbit AI
Orbit AI is a Singapore-based aerospace technology pioneer developing a decentralized low-Earth orbit satellite network combined with orbital AI computing infrastructure. Working with supply chain partners in China and the United States, the company aims to deliver solar-powered compute payloads, mesh network architecture, and blockchain-verified nodes in space, supporting global connectivity and digital sovereignty services. Together, the successful operation of Genesis-1 marks an early but meaningful step toward a future where artificial intelligence computation extends beyond Earth, opening new possibilities for scalable, resilient, and energy-efficient digital infrastructure.
