Oman Witnesses A Surging Demand for Postpaid Mobile and Internet Subscriptions

In recent years, Oman’s telecommunications industry has experienced a significant transformation, driven by a notable surge in postpaid mobile phone and internet subscriptions. This shift reflects changing consumer preferences, with more individuals migrating from prepaid plans to postpaid offerings and an increasing demand for data usage. This article delves deeper into this remarkable trend, highlighting the substantial growth, market dynamics, and the resulting impact on Oman’s telecom sector.

Unprecedented Growth in Postpaid Subscriptions

According to data released by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the National Centre for Statistics and Information, Oman’s postpaid mobile phone subscriber base has witnessed an impressive surge of nearly 24% since April last year. The figure now stands at 1.716 million subscribers, showcasing an addition of over 330,000 new postpaid customers during this period. This growth demonstrates the attractiveness of postpaid plans among Omani consumers.

Simultaneously, the prepaid mobile subscriber base experienced a healthy rise of 9.3% to reach 5.193 million subscribers in April 2023. This increase translates to an additional 443,000 prepaid customers compared to the previous year. Collectively, Oman’s total mobile phone subscriptions, combined prepaid and postpaid, grew by 12.6% to 6.909 million by April this year, reflecting the evolving landscape of the telecommunications market.

Operators and Resellers Embrace the Shifting Paradigm

The telecom operators in Oman have responded to this evolving market dynamics with agility and innovation. Over the past year, they recorded a 9.4% rise in subscribers, with a total of 3.975 million customers. Mobile resellers, too, witnessed a 9% increase, reaching a subscriber base of 1.218 million. These figures indicate the collaborative efforts to cater to changing customer preferences and capture the growing postpaid market segment.

Omantel’s Strong Growth Trajectory

Omantel, Oman’s largest telecom operator, experienced robust growth in its total mobile subscribers. With an impressive domestic subscriber base reaching 3.251 million (excluding mobile resellers) as of March 2023, Omantel has demonstrated its ability to adapt and capitalize on this shifting trend. The company’s domestic revenues in the first quarter of 2023 grew by more than 22%, bolstered by the rise in postpaid mobile and fixed broadband revenues.

Ooredoo Oman: Navigating the Changing Landscape

Ooredoo Oman, another major telecom industry player, witnessed notable growth in postpaid mobile subscriptions. The company’s postpaid customer base expanded by 18.6% to 750,975 customers by the end of the first quarter 2023. Similarly, its mobile prepaid customer base grew to 2,121,628 customers during the same period. However, Ooredoo experienced a decline of 4.7% in its fixed-service customer base. Despite this, the company’s quarterly revenue increased by 1.9%, propelled by growth in mobile postpaid, higher handset sales, and increased revenue from ICT solutions.

Internet Services: Fueling the Digital Transformation

The demand for high-speed data usage and internet services has seen a substantial upswing in Oman, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Active mobile broadband subscriptions rose by 12.6% to 5.781 million in April 2023, and fixed-line internet connections increased by 3.6% to 539,329 subscribers during the same period. This surge in demand is a testament to the nation’s growing reliance on digital connectivity and the desire for seamless online experiences.

Unveiling a Promising Future

The expansion of Oman’s international internet bandwidth capacity by an impressive 65% to 2,502,935 Mbps further highlights the country’s commitment to meeting the escalating data requirements. Such an increase signifies the nation’s determination to provide a reliable and efficient digital infrastructure to support its economic growth and the evolving needs of its population.

As Oman continues to witness this transformative shift towards postpaid mobile and internet subscriptions, the telecommunications industry is pivotal in facilitating connectivity and empowering individuals and businesses. This evolution drives economic growth and enhances the nation’s digital landscape, ensuring that Oman remains at the forefront of the digital era.

In conclusion, the surge in postpaid subscriptions, increased data usage, and the growing demand for internet services in Oman are reshaping the telecommunications landscape. As operators adapt and innovate to meet evolving customer preferences, the nation is poised to realize the benefits of enhanced connectivity, economic prosperity, and a flourishing digital ecosystem.
