The global automotive industry’s transition toward cleaner mobility gained another set of benchmarks as Green Car Journal announced its 2027 Green Car Awards, with the Kia EV3 taking the top honour as Green Car of the Year.
The awards recognised vehicles that demonstrated environmental progress while addressing different consumer needs, from urban transportation and family mobility to premium vehicles and commercial applications. Presented annually since 2005, the Green Car Awards have highlighted the automotive sector’s evolving approach to electrification, efficiency and lower-impact transportation.
The Kia EV3 emerged as the overall winner with its combination of affordability, electric range and compact SUV practicality. Priced from $29,890, the all-electric model offered up to 321 miles of driving range and DC fast-charging capability. It represented Kia’s effort to make electric mobility accessible to a broader segment of consumers while retaining the design and technology characteristics associated with the company’s larger EV models.
A Broader View of Green Mobility
The 2027 awards extended well beyond battery-electric vehicles, reflecting the increasingly diverse technologies being used to reduce transportation emissions and improve efficiency.
BMW’s iX3 was named Premium Green Car of the Year. Built on the company’s next-generation Neue Klasse electric platform, the model featured sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology and cylindrical battery cells. It offered a claimed range of up to 434 miles and demonstrated how premium automakers were integrating electrification with advanced digital systems and new vehicle architectures.
In the urban mobility category, the Fiat 500e received the Urban Green Car of the Year award. With a starting price of $35,700 and an electric range of 149 miles, the compact EV was positioned as a practical solution for congested metropolitan environments where manoeuvrability, parking and short-distance travel were important considerations.
Fiat also received the Neighborhood Green Car of the Year award for the Topolino, an ultra-compact electric vehicle designed primarily for short local journeys. With a starting price of $13,995, the model highlighted how smaller, purpose-built electric vehicles could address mobility needs that did not necessarily require a conventional passenger car.
Luxury electrification was represented by the Karma Gyesera, which was recognised as Luxury Green Car of the Year. The extended-range EV combined battery-electric driving with an onboard engine-generator, while its hand-crafted construction and personalisation options positioned it within the ultra-luxury grand touring segment.
Electrification Across Vehicle Segments
The awards also demonstrated that sustainability was increasingly being applied across different categories rather than being limited to conventional passenger EVs.
The Kia Carnival Hybrid was named Green Minivan of the Year. Its hybrid powertrain delivered up to 33 combined mpg and a claimed 608-mile driving range, while its spacious interior and flexible seating reinforced the potential for efficiency improvements in family-oriented vehicles.
Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Sportback EV was recognised as Green SUV of the Year. The crossover marked the automaker’s renewed presence in the electric vehicle market and incorporated technology developed through the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. It offered a claimed 282-mile range, dual charge ports with NACS fast-charging capability and a range of driver-focused technology.
In the commercial segment, the 2027 RAM ProMaster City was named Commercial Green Car of the Year. The model combined a 2,175-pound payload capacity, 2,000-pound towing rating and 167-cubic-foot cargo area with a relatively compact footprint suited to urban operations.
The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid completed the winners list as Family Green Car of the Year. Offering up to 36 combined mpg and a claimed 619-mile driving range, the three-row crossover demonstrated how hybrid technology could improve efficiency without sacrificing the space required by larger families.
Sustainability Meets Consumer Choice
The 2027 Green Car Awards underscored a broader shift in the automotive market. Environmental performance was no longer being defined by a single technology or vehicle format. Battery-electric vehicles, hybrids and extended-range systems were all contributing to the industry’s effort to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
By recognising vehicles across price points, body styles and use cases, the awards highlighted the growing range of choices available to consumers seeking more environmentally responsible transportation.
Green Car Journal, which had focused on the intersection of automobiles, energy and the environment since 1992, continued to track this transformation as automakers moved from early electrification experiments toward a much broader portfolio of cleaner mobility solutions.
The 2027 winners ultimately reflected an automotive market in transition, where sustainability, technology, affordability and practicality were increasingly becoming interconnected measures of vehicle innovation.
