F&B Bio Recyclage Launches Ghana’s First Waste-to-SAF Project to Propel Sustainable Aviation

Ghana-based startup unveils cutting-edge municipal waste-to-aviation fuel initiative, offering a dual solution to waste management and carbon emissions in air travel.

KUMASI, GHANA: In a landmark move for Africa’s clean energy and aviation sectors, F&B Bio Recyclage Ltd, a West African project developer, has announced the launch of a transformative Municipal Solid Waste-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project. Based in Ghana, the startup is pioneering a solution that addresses two pressing global concerns: urban waste management and the carbon footprint of aviation

The initiative, which leverages advanced gasification and Fischer-Tropsch technology, aims to convert non-recyclable waste into high-quality, eco-friendly aviation fuel. At the heart of this effort is F&B’s commitment to building a sustainable circular economy while helping the aviation industry meet its decarbonisation goals.

“This is not just a waste-to-fuel project—it’s a gateway to a greener aviation future,” said Mr. Frederick Opoku Agyekum, Project Development Director at F&B Bio Recyclage Ltd. “By turning municipal waste into clean energy, we are tackling environmental degradation and offering an economically viable alternative to fossil-based jet fuel.”

A Regional First with Global Impact

As the demand for air travel grows, aviation has become a major source of global emissions. The SAF project by F&B could be a game-changer for emerging economies, particularly in Africa, where waste mismanagement and fuel dependency remain critical issues.

This project will undergo a Pre-FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) study, assessing both technical and financial feasibility. Following this, a comprehensive FEED phase will be initiated to support final investment decisions and prepare for plant construction.

Key Benefits of the Waste-to-SAF Initiative:

  • Waste Diversion: Transforms significant amounts of landfill-bound waste into valuable energy, reducing environmental contamination.
  • Cleaner Skies: Offers a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuels, drastically lowering greenhouse gas emissions from aviation.
  • Economic Growth: Opens up new green jobs and infrastructure opportunities in Ghana’s clean energy sector, with long-term benefits for both urban and rural communities.

The technology behind the conversion—gasification followed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis—is known for producing ultra-clean, high-energy fuels that are compatible with existing aircraft infrastructure. This ensures a smoother path to adoption, unlike other alternatives that require new engines or storage systems.

Collaborations and Investment Potential

F&B plans to collaborate closely with waste management firms, clean tech providers, and aviation stakeholders, positioning itself as a reliable partner in Africa’s green energy transition. The project is aligned with global efforts to cut aviation emissions, and is also expected to draw international interest from climate finance bodies and ESG-focused investors.

With an official presence at the Tema Industrial Enclave, F&B Bio Recyclage Ltd. operates under a registered Special Purpose Entity (SPE) structure. The firm has the legal mandate to design, build, finance, and operate waste recycling and bio-refinery plants, along with export-oriented energy infrastructure.

“We bring innovation and integrity to every project,” the company notes. “Our commitment is not only to the environment but also to delivering high-quality results that exceed stakeholder expectations.”
