Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and China Airlines Chairman Shing-Hwang (George) Kao
China Airlines has opened a new chapter in transpacific air travel with the launch of its first-ever non-stop service between Taipei and Phoenix. The inaugural flight, CI036, touched down on December 3, marking a historic connection between Asia and the American Southwest. It was more than a ribbon-cutting moment. It was a symbolic handshake between two regions eager for faster travel, stronger business ties and broader tourism opportunities.
Chairman Shing-Hwang George Kao personally flew on the debut flight, joining travelers, aviation partners and dignitaries who gathered at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for the celebration. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and several senior officials, including Taiwan’s Minister of Transportation and Communications Shih-Kai Chen and American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond F. Greene, were present at the event. Their message was clear: this route is an investment in connectivity, commerce and community.
With Phoenix now established as China Airlines’ seventh hub in North America, the new 12-hour connection trims nearly six hours off itineraries that previously required transfers. For business travelers, this time savings is significant. For leisure travelers heading toward Arizona’s spectacular landscapes or the broader Southwest, it is a welcome boost in convenience.
China Airlines has deployed its next-generation A350-900 on the route, offering a blend of fuel efficiency, cabin comfort and modern design. The inaugural flight was fully booked, underscoring the strong demand for direct links between Taiwan and the United States.
Kao described Phoenix as a gateway to the American Southwest and a strategic transit point for travelers continuing to major U.S. cities. Through interline agreements with Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, WestJet and Sun Country Airlines, passengers landing in Phoenix can easily continue to destinations such as Denver, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Chicago.
The launch event also carried a celebratory touch of sports and culture. Taiwanese baseball player Yu-Min Lin, currently playing within the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization and sponsored by China Airlines, joined the ceremony. A small lottery added to the excitement, with five lucky passengers winning baseballs personally signed by Lin.
Onboard, the airline showcased its culinary creativity. Travelers were served star-rated cuisine, including dishes from Les Palais, a Michelin 3-Star restaurant. Cocktail pairings added flair, featuring Passionfruit Lemon and Oolong Blackcurrant blends. A selection of refined mains was prepared across classes, from Simmered Chicken Porridge with Premium Abalone to Surf and Turf Stir-fried with Rice. Peet’s Coffee also made its debut on the flight, delighting passengers with its rich American roast. Beginning next year, Peet’s Coffee will be available on all routes in Premium Business Class and Premium Economy Class.
As a gesture to commemorate Phoenix’s first-ever non-stop link to Asia, China Airlines gifted Knockaround sunglasses to passengers on the inaugural westbound flight, CI035. The brand, known for its bright, casual style popular among Hollywood personalities, was chosen to reflect Phoenix’s sunny, high-energy character. The gesture embodied China Airlines’ signature blend of Taiwanese warmth and thoughtful hospitality.
The airline continues to expand its global footprint while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability, service quality and innovation. With more than 10,000 employees worldwide and a fleet of 114 aircraft, China Airlines remains a major force in Asia-Pacific aviation. Its membership in the SkyTeam Alliance further strengthens its global connectivity, offering passengers access to an extensive network spanning 160 countries.
The Taipei–Phoenix route is not just a new line on the map. It is a bridge between cultures, a boost for tourism, and a fresh opportunity for businesses across both regions. And for travelers, it is a welcome reminder that flying can still feel exciting, meaningful and wonderfully connected.
