Aston Bay Moves Storm Copper Project Closer to Development Milestone

With feasibility work nearing completion, permitting advancing, and exploration targets expanding across a 110-kilometre mineralized belt, the Storm Copper Project is emerging as one of Canada’s most promising near-term copper development opportunities

Aston Bay Holdings has provided a significant update on the Storm Copper Project in Nunavut, highlighting steady progress toward development as key technical, permitting and exploration milestones continue to advance.

The project, operated by Australian partner American West Metals under a joint venture arrangement, is approaching a critical phase with its Pre Feasibility Study (PFS) expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2026. The study is designed to further validate Storm’s potential as a high-margin copper operation and strengthen its position as one of the few near-term copper development projects in Northern Canada.

Copper’s growing importance in electrification, renewable energy infrastructure and global industrial growth has increased investor attention on projects capable of supplying future demand. Against this backdrop, Storm’s development timeline and scale have elevated its strategic significance within Canada’s critical minerals landscape.

According to Aston Bay, the PFS is being completed in collaboration with several highly regarded engineering and project delivery firms, including Sacre Davey, Ausenco and the Nuna Group. Current work is focused on optimizing processing methods, refining mine plans and updating capital and operating cost estimates.

One area attracting particular attention is the evaluation of innovative processing technologies that could improve copper recovery rates while maintaining a relatively simple and cost-efficient operating model. The project’s development strategy relies heavily on ore sorting and beneficiation techniques, which could reduce environmental impact and lower processing costs compared to conventional mining operations.

Aston Bay Chief Executive Officer Thomas Ullrich expressed confidence in the project’s momentum, noting that the study is expected to demonstrate Storm’s strong economic potential and reinforce its attractiveness as a future copper producer.

Beyond engineering and feasibility work, the company continues to make progress on permitting activities. The mine permit application is currently under review by the Nunavut Planning Commission, with preparations underway for submission to the Nunavut Impact Review Board. The company remains on track for its previously outlined regulatory timeline, which targets mine approvals by 2028.

Environmental and social governance initiatives are also advancing in parallel. Additional environmental baseline studies are scheduled through late 2026 and early 2027, including wildlife, vegetation and ecosystem assessments required for the Environmental Assessment process. Indigenous community consultation and stakeholder engagement will remain central components of the project’s regulatory pathway.

Demonstrating growing regional support, the Government of Nunavut has approved up to CA$100,000 in Community Engagement Support Program funding to assist outreach and liaison activities. The funding underscores the perceived economic importance of the project for northern communities and regional development initiatives.

A major advantage for Storm lies in its financial backing. The Aston Bay and American West joint venture has secured a strategic partnership with Ocean Partners Holdings, a global metals trading and financing group. Under the agreement, Ocean Partners has committed to providing up to 80 percent of the project’s initial development capital through a senior secured loan facility, subject to the completion of a bankable feasibility study and final agreements.

The partnership also includes an offtake arrangement under which Ocean Partners will purchase all copper and silver production from the project at prevailing market prices. This combination of financing and sales support significantly reduces development risk and strengthens the project’s path toward production.

While development activities continue, exploration remains a major component of the Storm growth story. The project sits within a largely underexplored 110-kilometre copper-bearing corridor that management believes has substantial discovery potential.

Several high-priority targets have already been identified, including the Chevron prospect, a large copper anomaly sharing characteristics with known high-grade deposits at Storm. Additional targets within the Midway Storm Tornado corridor extend across more than 20 kilometres of prospective geology, while the Tempest target has returned exceptionally high-grade copper and zinc samples from surface exploration.

To further refine exploration efforts, a project-wide structural and geochemical assessment will commence later this year. The work aims to improve understanding of the mineralized system and identify new drill-ready targets across the district.

For Aston Bay, Storm represents far more than a single mine development. It is the foundation of what could become an extensive copper-producing district at a time when global demand for the metal continues to accelerate. With feasibility studies nearing completion, permitting progressing steadily and exploration revealing additional upside, the project appears increasingly positioned to play a meaningful role in Canada’s future critical minerals supply chain.
